A tribute to Amy Winehouse’s iconic style

Isn’t it ironic how Amy Winehouse rose to stardom with “Rehab” and her star set due to failing to do this very thing – “rehab”. A word that marked her peak as well her tragic passig.

Last month, I was disappointed when I couldn’t manage to travel to Athens to watch her scheduled performance on the 22nd June. “Next time”, I said to myself, “Amy’s young, so even if it’s not this or next year, someday I’m gonna see her perform”.

Needless to say, that concert in Athens never happened and no other will ever do.

The reason I am writting this article is to stress out Amy’s impact not only in music -an impact we already know as her melodic and powerful voice will always echoe in our ears- but also in style and fashion. Amy was a trendsetter not only in music but in fashion as well.

A strong personality herself, Amy Winehouse never succumbed to styling tips and fashion advice. On the contrary, she made others follow.

Her trademark beehive and bold black eyeliner brought the combo to another level than that of Brigitte Bardot and other 60s’ beauties; the beehive and eyeliner moved from angelic to rebellious. Fashionwise, she loved retro 50s style. She wore bold colors and prints, bust-hugging corsets and dresses with feminine cuts.

Amy Winehouse took the “beehive and black eyeliner look” from 60s angelic to post-Millennium rebellious.

Amy loved to accessorize her beehive. From flowers to drink decorative umbrellas, Amy had a signature controversialist style. Her favourite accessories were colorful foulards, which she tied in ribbons and used as headscarves and headbands around her beehive.

Amy Winehouse once tried blonde but her bleach did not come out as she might have expected and was quite unflattering compared to her dark-haired beauty image. So she then settled for a few blonde locks on her fringe.

Amy used to dress either totally boyish in jeans/shorts and a tank top, or be an absolute female who loved to show her beautful curves. She had even tried breast implants at some point.

Amy Winehouse loved checked bustiers, a style something between punk and pin-up american retro.

Amy’s love for anything colorful did not only show from her bold colored dresses and accessories, colorful floral and printed garments and foulards, but also from her own body. Her colorful tattoos filled her arms with her favourite colors; red, yellow and orange, providing her every outfit with a permanent, unique body accessory; her proud and loud tattoos.

Rest in peace, Amy.
