“Seas and Rocks” by Antonis Zenios

Cypriot painter Antonis Zenios presents a series of paintings in an exhibition under the general title “Seas and Rocks” at the City Hall of Ayia Napa from the 16th to the 30th September.

The surrealist painter has drawn inspiration from the sea and beaches of Cyprus, matching them with a notion of passion and sensuality.

“Love and sea go together”, says Zenios, explaining the female figures incorporated to the landscape.

Fragmented as they are, I feel that these womanly nudes suggest a link with past loves and  memories that are so much connected with the place in the artist’s mind, he can’t separate the one from the other anymore. Both have frozen in time, at the very moment of an intimate memory.

On the other hand, if we suppose that Zenios’ source of inspiration is non-personal, the fossilized women  could be equally translated as left-overs of centuries old history. And if I have to recall to mythology, Cyprus’ waters are the birthplace of Aphrodite, goddess of love, either way.
